New Year’s Resolutions? Again?

Here we are saying good-bye to another year and hello to a new one. It seems like the years keep going faster and faster and my goals for each year get put to the side as “life” takes over. Does anyone feel the same?

Last night I was on the couch with my husband and we began to have a conversation about past New Year’s Resolutions and it really made me start thinking. Every January I see an influx of new members at the gym. Yes! The #1 New Year’s Resolution is to get fit, lose weight, or get healthy and the gym memberships prove it. However, usually about 6 to 8 weeks into the year I notice these new members tend to disappear and it is back to the regulars at the gym again. I began to wonder why this happens. Why do so many people not meet their New Year’s Resolutions? One reason really stuck out to me and here it is! We set our expectations for ourselves to high. What I mean by this is we expect to get into the gym and drop the weight within days or a couple of weeks or we expect to see bulging muscles forming quickly and when we don’t see this happening we just give up! It has happened to me and maybe even to you.

What can we do to help ourselves? Simple…

      1.  Make sure you make your New Year’s Resolutions or goals attainable. Everyone has their own personal goals so don’t compare your goals to someone else’s.

     2.  Make sure you are realistic about what you want to accomplish. Does your goal and your lifestyle fit together? Can you really spend 2 hours in the gym every day?

     3.   Make sure you are setting small goals that help you reach your larger long term goals. Example-by the end of 2017 you want to lose 30 pounds then that means you need to lose 2.5 pounds a month. 2.5 pounds for the month feels a lot easier to accomplish than looking at the entire 30 pounds all at once.

     4.   Don’t sweat the setbacks! Everyone will stumble so just pick yourself up and keep moving forward.

Your New Year’s Resolution may not be about weigh loss or getting healthy however you can apply these same concepts to whatever your goal may be. If you aren’t sure how and need some help I am here for you! Just give me an email or a call and we can work together!

Until next time …
